Default cam sensor

I have a 97 ram 318 i pulled the codes and i get 012 and 021 parts store says there is no cam sensor found on here its in the distributer my question is if it is bad would the truck run and get worse as it gets warmer when its cold it runs ok when it gets to temp runs like crap like its not getting gas

i'll answer before hey-you chimes in , unplug your front O2 sensor, and drive it unplugged for awhile. you'll get a new CEL regarding O2 malfunction, however the PCM won't be able to receive feedback from O2 and go into emissions saving closed loop mode.

if it runs better this way, replace from O2.

also, cam position sensor is under the rotor in the dist cap, and usually listed as secondary pickup coil. it can go bad and cause loss of spark or timing problems and backfiring.

Ok changed both o2 sensors and tps and pick up coil (cam position sensor) starts better but still runs like crap when up to temp and still getting cel codes 012 and 021 any ideas? Also noticed it had new plug wires could they have them out of order, i'll have to check that out tomorrow

That's weird. It's whining about timing being over-advanced, AND over-retarded.... Check your crank position sensor.

Ok before i end up spending a ton money on this issue i have a quick question if i where to go with a msd ignition unit would this elimenate the computer in that aspect for the ignition system?

Nope. Even the MSD box needs to get its cue when to fire the coil from somewhere. On our trucks, that's the computer. Cam sensor has absolutely nothing to do with ignition timing. It effects injector timing.
