Wiper problem
So we got close to two feet of snow today. When I went to start the truck, I accidentally turned the wipers on. They didn't budge an inch, I shortly after smelt some electrical burning. I checked the wires and motor and everything, nothing burnt to a crisp. The wipers still work, but the time delay is off, way off. They stop bout half way in the windshield. I got to turn them on and off bout 3 or 4 times to get them to rest back to normal.
Is there a way to re-adjust the timer, or is there a relay I fired or something?
I want to ask first, it's around -15 and I don't want to be poking around in the cold longer than I have too. Thanks for any help.

If they will eventually re-park where they are supposed to be, and when running, sweep the correct area of the windshield, I would leave it alone till the weather was MUCH nicer.
That said, something may have slipped.... also, did you check the wiring in the steering column?

I haven't checked inside the column yet. It was dark by the time I got home... and cold. Should I just be looking for some fried wires?
I'm assuming the smell came from the wiper motor. I didn't smell anything untill I turned the defrost on, then the smell got blown into the cab.
Oh, by the way... What brand of double roller chain do you have? I was looking on rockauto and wasn't sure what one to get.

Ok, yeah, probably just the motor getting hot then. If it were in the column, you would have smelled it right away.
I bought the SA Gear, or something like that, from Advance Auto. (didn't wanna wait to order one.... I had to be in there anyway, timing cover was puking coolant....) Crane, or Comp cams double roller set is about the same price, and probably better quality. Make sure whatever you get is for the correct year engine. (and not the old LA design. that one won't fit.)

Thanks, for the tip both HeyYou And Stewieo1. I plan to attack the plenum come spring so i figured that would be a great time to upgrade.
As for the wiper's.... I think I'll take your advice HeyYou. Wait till spring. Probably just swap the motor out or something. They still work... just kind of a pain in the butt to get them back down. But hey, they are still in much better shape than both my Jeeps. lol

if the sweep range is still correct, and the park position is wrong or not working, then the "park circuit" in the wiper motor is not working.
you can fairly easily check for power on the park circuit wire at the motor. it might? be the blue wire (high speed, low speed, park circuit, ground). there's a chance the park circuit wire is melted or broken, but if the park circuit wire has power and is undamaged, then you have to replace the motor to fix it.

Ah, park circuit. Now that I did not know it had. I figured it was just some timing relay or something or other. I'll check that out as soon as it get to at least -5. I'll bet my next pay a few wires were melted, it was a pretty distinct smell. So, if I replace the fried wires.... will that fix it? Or is there some sort of reset to get it back to normal?
there is no reset.
if the park circuit wiring is damaged, replace that first. you need to have 12v present on the park circuit wire any time the wiper motor is on, low or high speed). see the wiper wiring diagram in section 8 of the 01 service manual. test the wiring at the electrical connector at the motor, under the plastic cowl.
if you have 12v on the park circuit wire, but the wiper motor will not stop at the down/parked position, then the motor is bad.
burned wiring smell can come from either the external wiring melting, or the internal motor wiring melting. both stink.
