I call them "dogs" because I don't know the proper name. My tranny has been grinding going into fourth for about a year now, but I've been too poor to fix it. I was able to "ease" it in for a while, but no longer. Now the other gears are following suit. I am looking forward to a tax return, and have no fear of rebuilding myself, but I can't seem to find a replacement coupling mechanism to replace the one I fear I've murdered. Any thoughts?

Also, I was goofing around in 4 Low the other day. I eased up to a dirt berm and attempted to climb it when I heard two loud bangs. It reminded me of the sound of a cheap ratchet breaking the pawl. I am afraid I know what it was, but I do terribly hope I'm wrong...

Sounds like you'll have your hands full busting on both parts. At least they'll be easier than working on an auto. You got presses and tools and schtuff?

I think I have everything. I was told at first i would need a 200 ton press, but I found more articles on the matter. What I haven't found is replacement "gear engagers".

I don't mind, location is Wilmington, North Carolina, at the beach and almost to the South Carolina line.

I believe the term your looking for is synchronizers. I dont think your gonna need a 200ton, maybe a 100 ton press for the tranny rebuild. Not sure about the t case. You could have broke a tooth in the sprocket or link in the chain. Prolly be just as cost effective to replace t case.

 

No, I know that the syncros are bad, hence the grinding; however, the grinding has happened for so long I fear I've damaged the engagement teeth that connect the counter shaft to the output shaft through the 4th gear set. I don't know what they're called. But if I can replace it while it's cracked open, I wanna.

 

Need to take it apart, and have a looksee......
