Ok I looked into the performance PCM. I could not find one for the life of me for my 1996 5.9. I was wondering though hemifever sells a pre tuned sct tu er for the 96 that I heard has great reviews. What would be the difference if I went that route?

With 285's, 4.10s would be nice. Gears can be done at home if you know how or have a friend that does. If you've never done them and you do it wrong you will totally fubar them up. Both gear sets and install kits will run you about 600 bones. I personally took mine to a shop cause I don't know how, I bought the gears and everything and total all together was right at 2k, but I had everything replaced. Wheel bearing and seals, intermediate shaft bearing and also had the LSD rebuilt.

You can email him with your vin and the PCM number and he can tell you if it's able to be programmer. I had to do that for my 97.

I'm sure you've done this, but give the truck a good tune up! I didn't see that on the list but it's rly easy to do if your already pulling off the keg anyway...also make sure that stupid check valve is out of the tranny line. Other than that, you've got a nice maintenance record there

'ight.
You said you rarely push it over 2500rpm, if that's the case, you're building up carbon in the combustion chambers. So you'll need to seafoam it every once in a while.

I know I do, but I also have 3923's...

What would I be looking at over all for the gears? I was laughing with my friends because the all have watched the evolution of this truck and I told them tha someday it will have its on garage and I will keep 3 water pumps at the ready, a 46re automatic transmission on hand, some thermostats, some headlight switches.... Haha
Ok I found you a Mopar performance pcm for a 96 see link below, the reason I like the mopar part over the tuner is 96 is part obd1 and obd2 after 96 use the tuner. This is my choice not everybody will agree, if you look around you will find the the tuner will kill a pcm and a few here have found that out the hard way. With those size tires a change to 3.92 is spot on that will put you where you need to be, not cheap to do but a wize investment, about $1500 for the whole job.

Gear sets can be found for $450 (for the front and rear diff's)as I just priced these out for a fellow member, and unless your bearings are shot you only need a minor install kit about $200 for both.

Ok the problem is I don't have 1500 thats pushing it. Would you suggest smaller tires? It's just hard to get around the fields and snow and such when they are smaller. Ok I will look into seafoam. Ok soooo this is probably gonna make me sound like a dumba** but what goes into a tune up? Haha just have to add pacer can lights came today... Pretty excited

Tune up would be plugs, wires, dizzy cap, and rotor, air filter if needed and maybe some fresh oil. The seafoam you pull the tube from the brake booster and VERY SLOWLY dribble it into the intake with the truck running, Pour about half let it sit a few minutes off and reconnect the tube then crank it up and give her hell. It's gonna smoke like a train. Forgot, pour the second half in the gas tank.

Never a dumb *** for asking a good question!

A good tune-up will include

Distributor Cap, rotor button, spark plug wire's/leads, good spark-plugs, oil change, oil filter, air filter. Me I would just add the sea-foam to the gas let it do it's thing that way or/and add some to the oil before you do the oil change. For these parts I prefer just good old Mopar parts from the dealer, they will be close to most stores for prices on this little stuff.

As spring and summer is on it's way and you don't drive the truck too much in that season stick to your tire size for now and over the summer keep your eye's open for a used set of gears, there is nothing wrong going used as long as they are in good shape. then save some cash for the install of said gears, even talk to some schools mech shop and see if they can help you with the install so the class can learn.

I don't like to recommend to people to pour anything down the intake unless you have done so before, it could be a disaster waiting to happen.
