Default Maintenance advice

OK. Just picked up 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4wd pick-up with the 5.9L w/ 92k. This is my first pickup and want to maintenance this beast. So, I have a few questions.

1.. What is the best brand for Rotor, Cap, Wires, etc.. for a tune-up that works best for this truck? I have searched and found advice on plugs but not the other items.

2. Anyone here use Amsoil products? All my buddies us it but they dont have a Dodge Ram. They have other Chrysler vehicles but not a Ram. They swear by that stuff.

Thanks in advanced.

Just get a good cap with brass contacts and rotor, a set of copper plugs and a good set of wires. Route the wires per this tsb: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/18-48-98/18-48-98-v8.htm

I got the Summit Racing kit with cap, rotor, and wires. Havent had any problem and theyve been on over a year.

As far as oil, its personal preference. I use Rottella T 15 40. Yes its a diesel oil but works fine and "seems" to have smoothed the motor a bit.

Brand is less imprtant but brass contacts are better than aluminum for cap and rotor. Do NOT loosen and turn distributor. Go wtih good wires. Thicker insulation is better. I run MSD, I think 8mm.

I think Amsoil is overpriced as well as any synthetics. I have five vehciles running and one vehcile with over 250,000 miles. I have always run Pennzoil and Valvoline (hogh mileage) in them. Some like and swear by synthetics. Different strokes for different folks. Main think is quality filter and routine GOOD maintenance routine. And a habit of reapir as opposed to "patch" to get by. Not driving like a fool is also helpful.

Does it matter which rotor I get? What is a good rotor?

The cool thing is that these engines don't need high dollar stuff in the tune up area.

Napa is more than adequate for the brass cap and rotor. Wix oil filter too.

+1 on the copper plugs, Champion.

As already posted cap with brass terminals & rotor, me I just use Mopar stuff from the dealer. Oil is your preference, I use a Mobil 1 oil filter and a good 5w40 oil. I also use the MSD 8.5 wires and they are holding up very well.

The MSD 8.5 wires. Are they the 12" ones? According to Advanced Auto they are not for my Dodge.
