my son went to look in the hole for the distributer (he can actually fit back there) lets see what we find

Are rockers tightened down? Even if not, a little resistance is not an issue. It should not "free wheel" but rotation should be smooth and not jumpy.

Your son saw the pin in the distributor, or down the hole?

no pin but he found whats left of a plastic ring (he is still fishing)

ok i found the pin it was sitting in the pan i dumped the oil it was attached to the drain plug and got out all the plastic we could find
