Default Need to identify part in Tranny pan

So.... removed my old leaky tranny over the weekend, I'd found a used one on a 68k truck- I pulled it, checked the pan and oil- not bad no major particles, so replaced the solenoids with borg warner, checked the bands and added a new speed sensor, put in a new filter, adjusted the bands, cleaned it up and installed it. Filled it full of nice new atf4 and thought I was set.... ran in through the gears with the selector as I added fluid- added about 9 quarts plus filled the T converter- sounded good, found all the gears and no leaks time for a test drive- went about 300 yards no second gear and an overheat / od light- and burn tranny fluid you could smell a mile away( and yes I removed the check back valve already)
great... so I turned around to head home and the tranny started slipping and then no forward gears and the awful buzzing noise and to complete the dash christmas tree, the check engine came up- all within a few thousand yards of my garage- After a long weekend R&R 'ing the tranny I let it set until today and dropped the pan as obviously the fluid was smoked so I needed to take a look- I found burned tranny fluid and this snap ring which I need some help identifying- looks like I may have to remove this thing again but if I could somehow replace this ring without dropping the tranny I'd like to know - thanks in advance-
Here's a link to the image of the part- embed does n't seem to be working - www.screencast.com/t/N4SKRcSVkE

I believe that is the OD snap ring. Where and how it goes I dont know, but someone else that does will probably chime in shortly.

IMO, it sounds as though the "new" trans is shot and in need of a rebuild, but you may luck out and be able to reinstall the snap ring, dump in new fluid and be good. Tough call though.

...after showering off the smell of burnt tranny fluid and digging into the 46re factory manual, it looks like it might be the low-reverse drum snap ring or more likely a servo retaining snap ring which is more likely (I'll verify tomorrow) - though how it could get to the pan intact if it's the low reverse ring is beyond me.

Do you know if the trans worked before you put it in your truck? I'm assuming you got the trans out of a truck in a salvage yard? Was the trans already toast?

No i don't think it was toast- I got it off a wrecked supposedly previously running truck on craigs list and pulled it myself and dropped the pan before I bought the tranny- the battery was still connected and I verified the milage- aside from a few pan gasket leaks on the engine the tranny looked pretty good so I bought it for 200.00 the year and engine matched mine I thought I did a pretty thorough recondition even checked the shaft rotation and input shaft end play ( approximately) with a micrometer everything looked good- not sure how the fluid could get smoked so fast unless there was a total pump failure or a massive internal clog in the VB I missed

Can you load photo into www.photobucket.com and copy and paste image link? I get a blank page saying some of the data is missing. Most likely snap ring from either direct drive or lo-reverse. More common failure. Also helps if you place something beside it for size reference for brken unidentified parts.

alrighty- looks like I may have lucked out- I went out back to the (still) dripping burnt fluid beast and crawled up under it with a light- it's the front (kick down) servo retaining ring, the servo is sitting there moving back and forth. The front servo coincidentally controls the front band and upshifts. I'm not sure if this was rebuilt, but it appears that this is not the correct retaining ring, close but not correct. I'll tear apart my old tranny and have a look. I'm hoping that the ring popped out- god knows why causing the lack of pressure and fluid flow resulting in the burnt fluid and lack of upshift into first

You can get the individual parts you need from www.wittrans.com. I would upgrade to the billet alum servos also.

Thanks - Here's the image link- the ring appears to be complete but not the correct ring for the kick down servo- http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/...ps185ab9c4.jpg
