Misfire, running out of ideas.
The spring can be broken in such a way that it still 'works', just not as well as it should. 
That many miles and STILL good compression? That's pretty farking good. A head swap will more than likely bring it up a little more too.... Yep. I'm jealous.

i say pull the valve covers and find out already.

I may do that but I was under the assumption that if it was a broken valve spring that the valve would be stuck open and I wouldn't build any compression. This weekend I will pull the valve cover off and give it a look anyways. It's got 210k hard miles on those original heads so I'm not too optimistic. Besides I've already got the ok from the wife to start ordering parts next week.
After checking the price on a set of EQ heads i am now really hoping that its just a valve spring. Cause im afraid i would have to go with odessas oe heads to save some dough. The cheapest set of EQ heads i found were like $300 more than the OE style.
