I want to spray paint my rims instead of buying new ones. What is the best way? Does any one have any suggestions?

 

PlastiDip.

Get them good and clean, maybe scuff up the surface a bit.

 

best thing to use if you want to get it down bare is use aircraft stripper.

clean rims (wash and let dry) then sand really good, then a little more sanding to get a good scuffed surface for the primer to stick to. clean REALLY good w/a good cleaner. do not touch anything because oil's are your worst friend here. hit w/primer and let it dry. now, time to sand again :P... clean it off, sand again, hit it w/some cleaner and then top coat. after top coat is dry, guess what, sand again...... clean and clear coat them a few times to protect from chips, ect... i would do no less then 3 coats of clear.


now if you dont care how long it will last, you can scuff, clean, prime, clean and top coat (clear coat optional) and call it a day.

all depends on what kind of finished quality product you want.

I heard duplicolor had a good thing for that?

 

I cleaned mine with windex.. Scuffed them up with sandpaper and cleaned again with windex.. Then sprayed... Its simple and takes 10 minutes to do all 4 wheels.

 

I used the duplicolor metallic silver rim paint on mine. Worked good, holds up to the mud, rocks and water no problem.

 

You didn't mention if they are steel or aluminum. If they are aluminum, and you have any chips or sand through to metal, you must use an etching primer. It's the only way to get the paint to stick for any length of time. The less time and effort you put into anything, the less satisfaction you'll get out of it. I brought my truck in to be painted last week thinking it was ready to shoot. I'd spent over two weeks prepping it, and they did most of what I'd done over again, and I have 15 years of (old school) body and paint experience. They pulled off my bumpers, tailgate, doors, bed liner, hood. I just walked out and said call me when it's done. the greatest % of painting is the prep work.

 

^^^Yup. It doesnt matter how good of a painter you are (could be THE best in the WORLD), but itll still look like **** if the prep work isnt done or done right. In other words, the paint is only as good as the prep.
