Burning smell need to diagnose

Hello guys, great community here lots of info. After some searching I haven't found anything relevant.
Whenever I'm driving my truck (98 318 4x4 quad cab) and kick it into a higher gear to climb hills (70-110km) there is a distinct smell of burnt rubber I'm assuming. Then when I bring the rpms back down the smell goes away but it is faintly there when I get out of the pickup, not enough to pinpoint it though.
Any ideas?

1st off you should be kicking it into a lower gear... to climb hills... but i think u just got your wording mixed up... and as for the burning smell ... your engines getting hotter then normal cus your reving it up and working it... so your at higher rpms and more heat could b the belt slipping or engines getting hot enough to melt a piece of plastic. or from just the shear power from your engine your burning tire all the way up the hill...lol

Yes sorry got my wording mixed up.
I know the smell of oil and it has a distinct smell to me. So I do not think it is that.
Antifreeze is a possibility, would there be any amount of smoke in that scenario?
Belts slipping, would this be old belts or lack of tightness?
It has been happening for awhile now I would think if it were a piece of plastic it would be gone by now.
Any input is appreciated!

Good point, if it's a manual, he could be mistaking the smell of a burning clutch for the smell of burning rubber.
On another note, I don't remember but, do these auto transmissions have a vent sticking out of the top like a GM does? If they do and the internal clutch plates of an automatic transmission are burning up the smell could be coming from that vent (if it even exists).

I know because I have a timing cover leak.
A burning A/C clutch smells like burning plastic or rubber though.
