Default What is a fair price to pay mechanic

Hello , recently I've noticed in the morning my lifters making noise when I start it up so tomorrow I'm bringing it to a local mechanic to have them replaced also I'm going to have him do the plenum at he same time. I was hoping someone could help me out with a fair price to pay. Thanks Ron

Switch your oil to another brand, this is a common thing with these motors lifters don't like to pump up. Parts will be close to two hun, labor I would say 6-8hrs for the job. If the plenum has not been fixed this is the time to do it.

Oil pressure is fine . Been using mobile 1 full syn. 10w30 . Over the last month noticed lifter noise for the first
5-10 seconds when I start it up .And sometimes when accelerating while driving. Figured It must me the lifters so was going to get them replaced while I have a few days to spare..

I used to use Mobil one but stopped after a few oil changes. I switched over to Castrol full synthetic 5w40, I am not a big lover of Mobil One oil, filters yes oil not.

And if you have plenum gasket replaced and use the original plenum plate, have them shorten the pan bolts.

My lifters rattled when I first got the truck. Switched to straight 30w. No issues, and pressure is above 50, and no lifter rattle.

i doubt that you need new lifters, but it is likely that you need your plenum fixed.

the clacking noise when accelerating is probably spark knock (pinging).

5 seconds of ticking at cold start is not anything to really worry about. as long as your oil pressure comes up pretty quick and the ticking stops.

my preference is to use regular oil.

I agree with dh that your lifters are fine. However, you could just get a cheap stick stethoscope and check more closely for piece of mind.

I've been running Mobil 1 for the last year and no issues at all. I'll hear a click, but it's upon cold startup. Couple minutes later....it's all warmed up and dulled out or not present anymore. It may actually be cold rockers and springs.....

Edit: I've gotten a quote for doing plenum repair and it was roughly $800.
