5.9L Differences? (97/98)
I don't think the 98 and up PCM will work on the older harness in any event, too much changed in that time span. Went from mechanical Odo, to electronic, and sensor driven gauges, to PCM driven gauges. So far as I know, there are NO differences in the block/heads from 93 to 02, the differences were in sensors, egr or not, and divider or not, in the intake, and one vs. two temp sensors.
Wiring between the 97, and 98 changed quite a bit, simply because they changed how a lot of things work. Sensors are all the same though. (aside from a lack of one temp sensor.)

Does the PCM drive the "digital dash" in 98+
Looks like I better stick with 96 for everything to make it easier.
Can anyone say that the EGR and divider are considered much of a performance factor? Sounds like it was changed more for the EPA than engineering purposes.

EGR became unnecessary to meet emissions, (PCM got better) so EGR went away. It doesn't really effect performance. (ok, it DOES allow for a bit more timing advance, due to cooler combustion temps... which seems strange, but, there it is...)
PCM drives the dash via the central timer module on 98 and later trucks.

What about the divider? Is that the airfoil in the throttle body?
So 96+ do NOT have the EGR system? (just block-offs)
If I go ripping a 96 PCM what's all this factory security talk about? There are two PCM revisions for each year; with and without a factory alarm??

One last thing...if the 96 PCM is for an auto tranny how much of a pain is it running a 5-speed with no check engine light? I read something about shorting out or jumping two pins on the PCM to override the tranny sensor or something?
Won't work. The PCM expects feedback from the trans, to match what it is telling the governor pressure sensor to do. If it doesn't see it, it will set a code. Only way to eliminate that, is to either get a PCM from a manual trans truck, or, re-flash yours for a manual trans. (I think you can do that....)
98+ 360s have the intake divider removed, and 2000+ 360s have 24lb injectors. Technically the 2000+ 360s should be the fastest 360s ever made on paper. Unfortunately a lot of the 98+ 360s got the death flash to cover up the pinging from blown plenum gasket by screwing with the timing thus ruining the power.
After hearing so much crap from my buddy saying how his truck has more power than mine because its newer I decided to shut him up and race his 2000 Quad Cab Dakota 4x4 with a 360 & dual flowmaster exhaust and in short my 97 extended cab sport 4x4 Ram schooled the crap out of his truck. I had no less than a 3 truck length lead at any time up to 85 mph and honestly all he seen was my rusty bumper the whole time.
I always down played his teasing, because we both have 360s with basically the identical drivetrain and I never took him serious until he rode with me one night and said his truck would waste mine because its got louder exhaust & sounds tougher, so I kind of was itching for the next time we'd meet up and he had his truck and see how I'd do against him. He's the kind of guy that would tell you "despite the fact we both have 9 inch peckers, mine is longer". We both had fresh tune ups and he had his plenum gasket done less than a 1,000 miles prior to us racing. I expected it to be a lot closer race than it was seeing that his Dakota is lighter than my Ram, but I tried anyway because I banked on him having the death flash lol I still don't know if he does or doesn't but fact is my truck smoked his, especially from the line & smoking the tires with my 3.55 gears!. From the line in my truck with a half throttle launch its like doing situps trying to hold yourself from being put back in the seat.
And if I ever find out he does have the death flash, I'm NOT telling him thats why he was slower LOL.
