Default Tire question

OK. I have been reading the forums and all tire recommendation have been to go big but those tires are also not what I am looking for and the tire brand/model tire suggestions are from 2010.

I currently have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.9 and is my daily commuter. I travel 40% Hwy adn 60% city.

I am looking for the best tire for MPG and an occasional off road. Sugar sand at most about twice a year for camping.

I currently run 285/75/r16 Wild Country Radial MTX mud tires. They came with my truck but only have 6K mi on them. I hope I can sell them after my purchase.

Anyway, I was thinking about a 265/75 or 245/80 AT tire but I have no clue what is good and will last me a long time. Is an All- terrain what I am looking for ? What do you all think?

When I get ready to make a tire purchase, I go to various tire sites and read the reviews on tires that may fit my needs. Reading reviews from folks who have the tires will tell you about things like wearing and what is a good or bad choice. The tire I like may not be a good tire for you. . Everyone has their favorite tires. Be an informed consumer, do your own research and make an informed decision.

that is exactly what I do. However, Tire Rack only has a relatively small variety and lack some pretty important information such as roll resistance. Now, I am not wanting that as much as I am personal experience and wisdom to help make a tire size and brand/model decision to help with my MPG and durability.

So, Here are some more specific questions that may address more what I am looking for.

1. I currently have 285/75/r16 mud tires (not by choice) and I am looking for a better tire that will not kill my mileage but is suitable to an occasional off road. What tire size and brand/make would suffice?

2. I currently have 3.55 gearing and will most likely never change them due to finances. What tire size should I consider that will not burn up my tranny/transfer case and gears when I do go off road?

3. This is my daily driver. I drive 40 Mi. every day. 40 Hwy and 60 city. I know tire size makes a difference here. Suggestions or experiences that worked best?

In Summary I am just wanting to know what everyone rides on and I will compare those with my preferences. Hopefully, I will stumble upon someone who drives similar travel and off road.

Thanks.

Unless you've got an ORE it probably came with 245/75/16 (or close to it) from the factory. Buy those size tires, the Good Year Tracker 2, available at WalMart and others places I think, it's a good tire with some off road capabilities, I would know, I've taken my 2wd down to the river and played in the mud and sand with those tires.

And they should be fairly cheap.

The door panel does say 245/75/r16. I will check those out. Any others?

The Toyo Open Country HT's are a great tire. I ran 2 sets of them on my 06 Ford F350 for about 70,000 miles each. They were quiet, did good in the snow (Ohio), great in the rain, and I drove a TON of highway miles. In 4WD, I never had any issues.
I also have a 2000 Sport with the 5.9/4WD. My truck came with 265/75/16's from the house. I'm going to replace the Michelins that are on it now with the Toyo's this spring.
FYI, Tire Discounters has them at a pretty reasonable price when you figure mount/balance/road hazard and free alignment.
Good Luck!

If you have a 4x4, chances are it came with 265's.

FACT.

If you get your buildsheet, it will say it on there. My truck has the door sticker that says 245, yet when I look at my buildsheet, it says 265.

This is interesting. Aren't the 265 bad for 3.55 gears though? I always hear that.

Lower gears would be better.... but, seems to work ok. (that's the combo I have on my truck.) I wanna go 33" tires and 4.56 gears though.
