Well it turned out to be the IAC which was clogged with oil. Truck is running great so far. THe only thing is the truck idles at about 500-600 rpms. This is very low compared to my truck previously idling at 1100. What is normal?
thanks for all the help it had been a rough ride but it was all worth it as i did burn outs down an old country road Im excited to clock my mpgs now with the plenum fixed and new sparks.

 

500 to 600 is just about right for these trucks.

thats where my idles when its all warmed up until then its around 700-800

mine idles right at 1,000 when cold, and around 700 when warm. it takes forever to warm up, even in the summer. this seems higher than normal

 

Oh sorry lol probably should have. I was wondering though Have had a kind of squeaky belt for the last month or so. The squeak happens more often as Rpms increase so I was wondering if possibly my idler pulley or other is bad. I have a warranty on the belt so I can replace that. I was thinking of cleaning off all the pulleys with a wire brush then putting a new belt on.

so i have been driving the truck. Had a random rpm drop then engine stall. I looked around and wiggled things. Seems that there is a connection that might be lose in the tps that was causing it. I also looked on Genos garage (dodge forum.org) and they said a common problem was that 1996 pcms are sensitive to low battery voltage, and that battery voltage should be 14.2 (+/- 0.2) volts. I checked mine and it is 12.8 with keys out of ignition. Should i be concerned?

 

Yes the 1996 is very picky about battery voltage. Clean your battery and cable terminals and re check it again, if it is between 14-15 volts your OK, otherwise if it is higher or lower have the alternator, battery, and regulator checked at a parts store, most will do it for free, O'Reillys does it for free for sure. I've had problems with the electrical system and it affects ALOT of other stuff.

 

You will not get 14 volts out of a 12v battery. It would only read 14 with engine running and alt pumping voltage to the battery.

Check all the grounds and make sure they are clean and tight. Espeially the one on the pass side head to firewall by PCM.
