Hello guys I'm new to this site hope u guys can help me
I have a 97 dodge ram 1500 5.9
My issue started like a few weeks ago it would take a few tries to get it started would crank an started now it doesn't even crank ? Took the starter to get check they said it was good battery is good also I also Check the starter relay an on 86 I have a volts an on the 85 side nothing?
86 is from the ignition switch, should only have power there when the key is in the start position. 85 runs off to ground. (thru park/neutral switch if auto trans) Does the relay click when you turn the key to start?
Something is keeping power from getting to relay from ignition switch. Got tilt wheel? If so, pull knee panel from under steering column and see if the wiring there is jacked up.
86 should ONLY have power when the key is in start position. 85 is the ground. Check resistance between pin 85, and any ground, should be close to zero. If it isn't, there is at least part of your problem. (failed park/neutral switch?)
If 85 shows continuity to ground, and you get 12v on 86 with key in start position, then you need to look at the power side of relay. (85 and 86 are the "contol" side of relay).

Remove connector and see if there is continuity through the switch with transmission in Park. If yes, then switch is good and adjusted correctly. If not, tighten and see if it closes the circuit.
