Default what is this?

Hey guys, just got a chance to really crawl around under my new toy and found something new. I have a 99 2500 with 60's all around. I found some type of brake proportioning valve of some type on the left rear framerail. Looks like under a heavy load or towing a trailer, this thing will pivot, but I don't know what it does. Maybe supply more line pressure to the rear drums? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think in this case, pictures would be very helpful. Yer description is great, but pictures would be even better.

Perportioning Valves are just what you said. When its under heavy load it makes sure that the front and back get the same amount of stoping force, not the usual where the front have more than the back.

I could be wrong though...its been a while since auto-shop but I can look for my work from that unit

Yea, that's it. My brother in law (the diesel mechanic), said alot of the rigs that come through his shop have them. He was suprised to see one on my "little" 2500. He's a big Ford nut, but then again, I used to be. I assume these valves are fairly common? Anyone else find one of these things?

As far as I know they're becoming really common. More and more HP mean sbigger and bigger trailers being pulled by our trucks!

My brother in laws 2500 has the same thing. He swears up and down that unless you're loaded heavy, the back brakes don't do a damn thing.
