Default Parking Brake Pedal

Afternoon everyone..

Just recently purchased my 96 Ram 1500 4X4 Extended Cab. I'm still getting used to the lay of the land if you will. Question???? When I engage the parking brake, is the pedal supposed to come back up? I can hear it engaging when pressing down and the mechanism locks in place and releases when I pull on the release lever but the pedal doesn't stay down. Is this normal? Every car/truck I've ever owned that has an emergency brake pedal that operates this way stays down until disengaged. Hope I explained this so you all understand...

Yes, normal for a RAM.

Ok, read your post too quick. The pedal should stay down until released. Get up in there with a flashlite and check the mechanism for sticking. You'll see when you look.

At least I know thats how they work on a 98 and up. Maybe someone with an older one will chime in to be sure.

It's weird...technically, it's "working" but for some reason the pedal isn't staying down...the parking brake does lock and stay engaged, but the pedal itself isn't staying "engaged" along with it...

get in there and look. There is a little lever thats stuck or broken. But on the other hand, if the park brake works then its really no big deal.

LOL, I hear ya. Just check, and like I said, maybe the older model rams did operate that way.

My uncle has the same truck, just 1 model year earlier (95), I'll reach out to him and ask him to operate the parking brake and see what he says...I'll post the outcome.

The pedal comes back up on a 96.
