Default 99 Ram Sport Wont Shift From 1st Gear in 4low

I have a 99 Ram Sport that im building a mud truck out of..in 2wd the transmission will shift no problem. As soon as I put the truck into 4low it will not come out of first, but will shift fine in 4hi. Any ideas as to what could be going on?

I don't think it's supposed to be in any gear besides first while in 4LO.
Granted, I've never tried this myself, but I also never felt like having to rebuild my t-case.

Mine shifts at least into second in 4 Low, but that's the fastest I've ever gone. I know it's not designed for speed, just torque. I wouldn't push your luck even as a mud truck. Rule of thumb, 4L stay in first, 4H, game on for everything else.

I dont want it going into second while wheeling really, although some holes second would be nice but i want it to come out of first in the trails. It gets real annoying going from 4low to high constantly and currently on 38's I cant wheel in high until i find some Dana 60's and regear

When I plow in 4 low sometimes, there is no way I'd ever rev the motor that much for it to shift into 2nd. I suggest you switch to 4hi as much of a PITA it might be. Besides, while in 4hi , just move the shift lever to 2nd.

struggles way too much in 4 hi to spin 38's, the reason why i wheel in 4 low. Ive been reading forums everywhere and cant find anything.

Im assuming you are running stock gears and axles... Just gonna have to stick to going back and forth between the 2.. You could also spend the money to regear but that would be a waste if you are swapping axles.

Yes you are correct. Its a budget build right now and wheels fine in low, just boggles my mind why it wont come out of first

You said you don't mind being only in first gear when in the mud (Makes sense) but why do you need to spin your tires when on trails?

As far as I know, they werent designed to get much past first or second gear in 4L. If you want more gears in 4L, Im thinking you will need a 5 speed.
