Default Black Transfer case oil?

We changed the transmission and transfercase oil this weekend and when we go to the trasfercase, the fluid was a black color and had the viscosity of water. My uncle who works on transmission for a living has no idea what it was, any ideas? The transmission fluid was normal.

t case uses atf+4. so it was obviously long overdue for a fluid change.

Thoroughly used up transfer case fluid would be my guess and I don't work on transmissions for a living.....you changed it, now it's good so no worries. Maybe check it again after a couple hundred miles to make sure your not getting water in the t-case from anywhere.

i forgot to tell that the fluid also smelt a little burnt. We put in atf+4 and the truck has 102000 miles. And its even shifting better than it was with the new fluid.

Why are you digging up a 2 month old thread?

And ATF+4 is the replacement for Dexron II and ATF+

How old is your service manual, bro? lol

Alright, well, either way, ATF+4 has superceded all other previous ATFs Chrysler has used in the past.

You're thinking of the snap ring failure. Yeah, since you've already got it apart, replace that bugger. There is an improved snap ring called the Transfer Case Saver.

trans takes atf+4, so regardless of what the SM says, id run atf+4 in the t-case anyway. if the seals go out they will leak into one another resulting in fluid contamination.
