i borrowed a harmonic balancer puller as well. but i have no idea how that would work to get it off.

the three jaw puller seems to make sense but well its not working for whatever reason. thought maybe i was doing something wrong.

You either have holes with threads in which you could use a steering wheel puller, or you have holes with no threads and you have to use the 3 jaw puller.

My '01 has holes with no threads, had to use a small 3 jaw puller

Edit:

The 3 jaw puller works the same way, only you have to get the "jaw" end or "hooked" end in the holes then use the screw to pull it out...

this is my balancer. no holes. just the flat surface on the back. and the puller keeps slipping off the back. i think maybe the puller is to small and that might be part of the problem. had my wife helping me and that was the conclusion we came to. the geometry just doesnt work out. gonna try in the morning to see if maybe i can find a larger puller.
by the way im borrowing the the three jaw puller from oreillys. its a pretty standard puller.

anybody got any other suggestions?

On a 97? That doesn't look quite right... It was my understanding that the change to the one-piece HB happened in 2000? Mine has a bolt on pulley... I used a steering wheel puller.

In any event.... stick your jaw puller back in the holes, and then jam something in around the jaws to prevent them from slipping off. Wood blocks would work just fine. Once it breaks loose, it comes off easy.

well i changed out my harmonic balancer a few years ago, because it came apart so this is the style i have now. and i know i eventually got it. just dont remember what it was i got it with. im pretty sure it was with the jaw puller.
it is just incredibly frustrating trying the same thing over and over again getting the same results. i could have been done with everything by now if it wasnt for this stupid balancer

i finally got it! went back up to the parts store and got the biggest puller they had. the 7-ton 3 jaw puller. fits beautifully over the pulley just like it was supposed. and within less than a minute it slid right off. the little 3ton piece of junk is poop. they guy at the parts store was like was the 7ton is a monster i dont think it will fit under the hood so i didnt bother. i should know by know not to listen to them.

anyway for future reference to anyone else dont waste your time with the smaller once go for broke on the big boy and you will be happy it fits on the outside of the pulley. just like this!
