do you know if it has the stock trans cooler on it? if so that would cause your transmission to burn up from not cooling the fluid properly the cooler is on the front of the ac condenccer on the topleft side it looks like a small version of the condencer replace it with a bigger aftermarket trans cooler

There are a couple of things, most stated already. Check fluid (in Neutral - not park). Check for clogging solenoid and pressure sensor. And how much gunk is on the magnet in the bottom of the pan? Also go to the FAQ/DIY section and find the Check Valve Delete thread. Follow instructions.

While you are in the FAQ/DIY section, find and download the service manual for your truck (2001 will work).

Now check the TV cable adjustment.

THEN - check the plenum gasket (not related to your shifting issue, but an issue you need to check).

And you have to post up photos. We are funny like that!

Welcome to DF!

I got around 20,000 miles before needing rebuild, from new fluid , cleaning things up and band adjustment. Had same issue, would shift by letting off the gas. Got 50,000 on rebuild and going good currently.
