nah, still dealing with pretty much the same subject material.

97 and 98 are direct swaps. In 00, they changed the pinout on a couple of the sensors, and had different mounting method for the governor pressure solenoid, (or the sensor, don't recall which, maybe both) It is possible to convert over to the correct parts for your year PCM, so everything works as it should.

So if I understand correctly the transmission will bolt on from a 98 to a 97, but some components in the pcm will need to also be swapped? To allow for proper function.

98-97 is direct swap. No parts changing required.

99-00 is the break point for different solenoids in the trans. If your truck and trans are on opposite sides of that break point, just need to get solenoids/sensors for the year of the truck. I think the bracket the GPS mounts to is different though, so, something in there will be required as well. gdstock has some good info on this in one of his trans threads.

If 99 is the split year on transmissions, how different would a 97 nv231 and an 01 nv231 be?

No differences that I am aware of, aside from the shift pattern.

Are you taking about how the 97 had a jog and the 01 is straight back? Or something else

In my 96, the stick starts with 2hi all the way forward, one back is 4hi, over and back down again, is 4Lo.

On the 98 and newer trucks, I think it starts with 2hi with the shifter close to the seat, one click forward is 4hi, etc. All the mounting points and such are exactly the same though. Just the shift pattern changed.

Going back to my original reason for starting this thread, ive read the front axle swap that was posted on here probably a dozen times over, however the user who posted that didn't do a follow up rear axle post. is there a diy post here or on another site similar site that is a "go to"? i'm a visual learner so more pictures give me a clearer idea of what i need where and how. also if i have the whole truck with the entire assembly do i still need to make modifications to fit it to my 01 from a 98 2500 donor.
