Default 47re Stuck in 3rd Gear

Hey guys, I'm new here but I've got a question. I have a 98 Ram 2500 3/4 ton Diesel (24valve) with the 47RE Transmission. The other day it was running perfectly shifted like it should at 15-25-35-45. I parked at the store went in came out maybe 10 minutes later and boom stuck in 3rd so i limped it home and parked it for a couple days and started it up on Saturday and all was well it shifted perfectly again. Started it this morning and it went back to 3rd gear only on my way to work. Worked for 4 hours went outside started it and it worked perfectly again. When it's stuck in Third i can manually put it in First and Second gear with the shifter and they both work fine but when i put it back in drive it automatically goes back Third. And when it works it works like it should and shifts gears 1-4 and pops into O/D like it's a brand new Transmission. Any help is appreciated seeing as it's my Daily Driver.

Thanks in advance!

Dustin

That's limp mode for some reason. Is the CEL on when it happens? Eliminating check valve might be a place to start. I'd also drop the pan and see what looks like inside.

There's no CEL when it happens, and what do you mean/what is the "Eliminating Check Valve" and how would i go about doing that? I'll have to drop the pan soon when i get some ATF and I'll let you know what it looks like. .

Thanks again.

Trans check valve. It's up near the radiator, in the soft line that goes to the lower fitting. (trans cooler lines.) They like to clog, and then your trans overheats. Not a good scene. There is a DIY for eliminating it in the FAQ section here.

While you have the pan off, have a look at the governor solenoid and sensor. Might try cleaning them out good. Might help. Won't hurt.....

Hey, thanks for the quick replies I'll get to it and see if it fixes the problem and I'll have a look at the DIY for eliminating the Check Valve. Thanks again.

Just remove that soft line from the hard line and the radiator and use a 5/16" drill bit(IIRC) and drill the check ball out(it's plastic) . Then just spray/clean the hose out real good, and reinstall.
