Gear indicator cable broke

Gear indicator cable broke
Well today has been a rough day. Had my dash apart trying to fix something in the cluster and I pulled the cluster out too much and pulled the gear indicator off the column. Can't tell if I pulled it out or broke it. The cable is still attached to the cluster. I didn't look fast enough to see exactly where the cable attached to but I'm assuming close to shifter. Haven't been able to find much on the issue. Anyone have any advice?

seems like the PRNDL is a module that screws into the back of the cluster and has the cable attached. the other end of the cable clips to the shifter.
you may have pulled the clip loose, or you might have broken the cable. find the white plastic clip with the adjusting **** and look for the end of the cable.
worst case you might have to buy a PRNDL module from dealer or junkyard. or you might be able to splice the cable back together with something. maybe tie a knot or loop in each end and splice in a piece of wire.

I used the PRNDL off the 98 and used the cable and clips off the 96. The adjustment screw assembly was the same and the clip that connects the cable to the PRNDL was not quite the same but very similar. It installed fine however the problem was the cable travel was too short. When in park it was reading between park and reverse. So I cut some of the plastic on the back of the PRNDL off that was restricting travel and this extended travel enough that I even had some adjustment available. Then I sanded down the plastic where I cut so it would be smooth for the cable. I did it in a manner that there isn't any stress on the cable so it shouldn't break overtime. Sorry, I should have taken pictures. Basically it works if you are in a bind and you have some time to spare.
