Default NO BUS, NO Gauges. Here we go again

my 2000 dodge ram 1500 sport 5.9 with 138,xxx has been having the same issue for about a week now, its been on and off over the course of the week. it starts every time but when I start it all the dash lights come on, no gauges work at all, and the odometer says error code "no bus". what could be the reason for this? it has been hot out lately and it has been raining a lot lately. if anybody could please give me the best explanation for this because I have very little money to spend on this.

sometimes everything works and I have no problems, sometimes it happens but goes away within seconds, and sometimes it stays on for the whole drive.

I'm thinking water is getting on the PCM connections. When it stops raining, remove the negative battery cable , then disconnect the pcm connectors and inspect, clean and put die electric grease on them. Re install the connectors to pcm first, then battery. See if anything changes.

And just for future reference, you don't need to reply 3 times when you think of something else. Use the "edit button"

I've herd with our trucks that the PCM can start to warp and crack. I had the "no bus" problem too and I lost my gauges. They would go out then come back on. I took off my dash bezel and instrament panel and checked it out. There were some loose bolts that hold the cluter in and some of the wires were loose. I tighted everything up and never had the problem again.

Thanks for the replies, ill be sure to try that when the weather gets better here down in florida and also we blew the area around the pcm connectors with compressed air and everything was normal again, but I'm not holding my breath, ill try what u recommended and also I forgot to mention this truck is parked on a inclined driveway about 95% of the time when I'm not driving it including during this week of heavy storms

Even with water splashing on the front of PCM, the hooded connectors should keep moisture off the connections. Pull connectors and clean as needed and reconnect each one. Make sure they are tight and PCM is mounted securely. Also check the ground wire from back of pass side head to firewall by PCM.

well I tried taking them off, cleaning, and putting die-electric grease on them but they still had the same issue, so I took it to the local dodge dealership here in FL. They said a wire connected to PCM that controls dash lights and gauges got really wet and shorted out. so they replaced that and also they had to replace something ( I forgot the name) but its something by the cowl that prevents water from leaking down there.

welcome to df.

it not necessarily the pcm. could be a wire, the white plug in the pdc, bad connection at the pcm, bad ground, or bad 5 volt sensor.

one of many threads-
