Hi Guys , I'm in Australia and we have what we thought was a '97 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L sport club cab 6 seater , have had it a number of years , its a beautiful truck , but lately we had got some bad fuel , so I thought I would put a new fuel pump in it .
We went online and bought one from Texas ( they told me it was top quality ) , it got shipped over , we installed it , lasted about a week ....pump motor stopped working , the Texas company shipped over another one , we installed that one ....it lasted 2 weeks.....the pick up tube from the pump motor to the regulator filter fell off , I fixed that and got the truck going again and also fitted a new Standard brand crankshaft position sensor while we had the truck off the road .
All good ........we have noticed now the truck takes a heap of cranking to start the engine and when it does start , it blows heaps of black smoke out the exhaust .....................to me its flooding on start up ...??????
I have read somewhere there are 2 types of fuel pump pressures on these things , around 50 lbs fuel pressure on the '97 - '98 Rams and about 36 lbs on the '94 - '96 Rams ..............
I seem to think I maybe have the wrong fuel pump for this injection on the truck ............
the date of manufacture plate says 11/96 ( pop rivetted on the firewall ) and also the injection rails dont have the pressure port test fitting .
....... can I check the VIN number to give me the exact year ??
Anybody got any ideas ...........nobody here in Australia has been of any help , and we love our little pick up
Cheers from across the billabong
