Default What causes a gas smell in oil?

I drained the oil from my Ram the other day and noticed as the drain pan was filling up, I could smell a light aroma of fuel in the oil. Nothing major, but I could smell it. Keep in mind, the 5.2 still runs out strong, pulls my boat like a champ. Never given any problems other than the normal stuff, tranny, plenum etc. The plenum has been fixed before, but just the temp gasket replace, not the perm fix.

Do a compression test and check for leaky injectors. Not sure how else gas would get down there.

If you don't get the engine up to operating temp for at least 15 minutes or so, fuel from blowby also accumulates in the oil..... needs time to boil that stuff off.

Frequent short trip driving (city driving) is the main cause of what HeyYou described.

a fuel injector hanging open can do the same thing. that particular one will bleed off the rail pressure when the engine is off. then the cylinder fills up and slowly drains passed the rings and into the oil pan.
one of many things could be going on here!
