Default Gear Swap 2nd gen to 1st gen

hey guys, i have a set of axles from my from, i had dana 60 and 70 from a 3/4 ton and anyways i was wondering if i could steal the gears out of them and put them in my 1st gen. Just wondering if anyone knew if it was a plain swap as far as the spline counts go on the shafts.

Probably not.. You could just swap the axles over completely.. What is the 1st gen?

^His RamCharger. Same running gear as a 1st gen.

You're talking about swapping gears, that won't work as you likely have a D44 and Chrysler 9.25 and I don't think they swap back and forth. You'd be better off swapping the entire axle as dlyter said.

im not talkin about just swappin the ring gear and pinion, im talkin about swappin the spider gears and all, as long as the shafts will fit with the spiders...

i would love to swap the axles over, but i cant on the front cuz its passenger side drop, and the d60 i have is driver side drop.

but yes i could swap the rear totally. but then the front wont have the same gear ratios... i could buy the same ratio for the d44 up front i guess...

and i cant remember was it the d44 or the 9.25 that was the weak link and didnt like 37s?

It was the D44. The 9.25 doesn't allow gear ratios to go higher than 4.56 though IIRC.

Could get a new t-case? Lot more cash spent though.

Parts from a Dana 60 will not fit into a Dana 44. And parts from a Dana 70 won't fit a 9.25 for sure. Swap the axles or forget it. A Dana 44 can run 37" tires if you are easy on the go pedal. I'm running 38" TSL SX tires on a HP44 with 5.13 gears. So far I have trashed one u-joint which took out both the inner and outer axles. Now I have Longfield 300M u-joints & Alloy USA replaced the shafts for free.

There are ways to make a Dana 44 stronger and if your of the mind to you can run Dana 60 35 spline axle shafts in a Dana 44. But you have to run Dana 60 inner "C" and outer "C". It would cost over $1,000 to upgrade a Dana 44 to run Dana 60 shafts. The nice thing about doing this is that you have a lighter axle that is almost as strong. There is a shop in Washington that sells kits to run a Dana 50 ring gear in a Dana 44 which would increase your strength by 33%. Something I have looked into doing with my axle.
