Default a few issues.....

Hey guys!!

A few weeks ago, my cat converter broke at the welds on the inlet side. The cat itself was starting to crack from rust, so I decided to take it off completely. Put a y adapter and a piece of pipe straight to the muffler, and cut off both o2 sensors. Basically I hacked the job, because, well I'm kinda broke right now...I got no port on my pipe to put the sensors in, so it gives me twice the 21 code on the key dance fault check. I also had a code 12 witch is odd because that battery has not been unplugged since last year. Also had a code 32 and 37....32 is new to me, and 37 had been there since the first time I checked those codes, in 1994 loll.

Did this exhaust thing on Sunday, and drove the truck on monday with no noticeable change except for the sound and the dummy light on. Drove it wednesday and still ok.

This morning I had no overdrive. It was a cool night so I waited a few mins for it to engage but nothing. Drove 25 miles and no overdrive at 60mph. Drove back at night no overdrive. From my work, I jump on the highway at the end of our driveway, and it would usually take 3-4 miles to engage. Now nothing.

I'm wondering....could the unplugged o2's be causing the pcm not to send it the OD command? Or did it go into limp mode, disengaging the OD? It seems electrical because it did not have an issue before and all other gears are crisp.

1994 2500 5.9 gasser, not sure of tranny model....Thanx in advance!

Check out this link. And no , the o2 should have nothing to do with the tranny.

Yeah that's where I check all my codes at....

I kinda figured o2's had nothing to do with it....just making sure Z....Any guesses as to why the od would just stop like that?? Anyway to jump something to test it??

Per that link, you read note #1 right? Other than that, you need to drop the pan and see if the wires are chaffed and if anything bad is floating around in the pan.

Yeah I did, and I don't have the towing package, so that code has been in the computer since I bought the truck new in 1995.
I know NOTHING about trannys. I know my way around most parts of those trucks (with help from DF members like you, Z), but when it comes to transmissions, I'm lost.

Now here's something I would like for someone to clear up: I'm old school. I was told numerous times that when your transmission hasn't been maintained up to spec, change the fluid and filter and very often your tranny will fail soon after. Is this true?? Should I be concerned about that on Dodge Transmissions?

Happened on my old GM c-15, and on my 89 silverado. Both times I felt the oil was very dark and dropped the pan, filled her back up and both of them failed within a month. (I know GM's have very bad tranny's)

These are not the greatest trannies of all time . Have you tried resetting the pcm? And you should probably also remove the check valve. And for sure, drop the pan.

No, I did not reset the PCM. I will give that a try. It's raining bad right now and my shop has a grader in the middle of it that I'm pulling parts off, so no room for dodges loll. I will drop the pan as soon as the weather clears up and post what I see in there....

Thanx for the tips, Zman!!

Get a Haynes manual and see if you have the correct tools to adjust the bands while the pan is off. Also install a drain plug and Gov solenoid. Replace while pan is off.
