Transfer case & differential - 1995
I'm here to help a landscaping friend with a 1995 Ram truck needing a new transfer case and differential. Apparently Mopar threw different versions of these into trucks at random and getting the correct replacements isn't easy.
The truck is at a dealership only willing to sell and install brand new units. They have refused to tell my friend the codes he needs to search for used/rebuilt units.
He will stop by and read whatever stamped plates he can find under the hood, but is that enough to do the research? Or is he also required to know the numbers forged into the housings themselves? That would require having it towed to a more agreeable shop, which he'll have to do sooner or later.
The VIN is 1B7KF26Z1SS166169
The last 6 digits 166169 is the 1995 serial number which ought to be enough if I can get it translated. Is it enough?
Appreciate the help. My very first car was a Plymouth business coupe and my last Mopar was a '64 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe convertible in college. Mopar is close to my heart.

Welcome to DF
Post 95 Ram questions in the 2nd gen ram section for a lot of info. And please, tell us all the info about the truck for better help. (forget the VIN#)
I'll move your post to that section, but we need more info.

What weight rating? Manual or auto? What gear ratio? 2 or 4 wheel drive? *4 wheel drive, else, why would you need a transfer case..... Doh!* What color? Are the windows tinted? (I have been hanging out around VW too long.....

We don't even know 1500,2500,3500? Have your friend get one of these. http://www.dodge.com/wccsapp/univers...ull&category=R
That and the tags on the diff and transfer case will tell you what you are dealing with. Plus, although not as good as the build sheet, if you look on top of this page you'll see "tech tools", there is a vin decoder in it.

Don't misplace your faith in website VIN decoders for Mopars, as I did. My number 1B7KF26Z1SS166169 shows up in some places like this forum's VIN decoder as gasoline powered and in others like myvindecoder.com/dodge-vin-decoder/ as Cummins diesel powered. It's said to be a 4-door sedan; it's said to be a pick-up truck.
Changed my mind about helping to fix this heap. Is going to require far more time and trouble than similar research on a Ford, GMC, Toyota, etc.
Sell it to a recycler and move on with life. In the landscape business, a truck is to earn you a living, not eat your time.
