Default 1996 Throttle Position Kick Down

I am having trouble with the truck shifting really late into third gear or drive and may be trying to use the passing gear in lieu of third gear. The transmission is not shifting until about thirty to forty MPH, most of the time around thirty. When I take the throttle valve cable off of the lever near the front band adjustment and shift linkage the truck shifts normally but has no kick down. I tried adjustment of the front band which is part of the kick down and showed no difference in the shifting into third with the throttle valve cable in place. I check the adjustment of the throttle valve cable and it is fine. One other problem I have is that the truck will not go into park and will sometime move until I make sure it is securely in park. The truck will not start in park and I removed the neutral safety switch to see if the shift lever was depressing the switch when the shift lever is all the way back and it will not. The reason why I included both problems is that I thought they may in some way be related.

Thank, you

Emmett

Start by inspecting your shift linkage. Something is off kilter there. There are some little nylon bushing in it that like to wear, so, you get slop.... Fix that first, and see if it doesn't solve the rest of the problems.

The first thing I did was replace the busings! I have set the adjustment on the shift linkage and checked it about three times. Lock the shift lever in park, lossen the adjustment nut, pull the lever on the transmission back and tighten the adjustment nut.

Not always successful.... I usually block the wheels, put the shifter in neutral, put the trans in neutral, and set it that way. Works better.

I have taken the safety switch out of the transmission, the linkage off of the transmission shift lever pulled it all the way back and when you look through the threaded hole the tab on the shift arm inside the transmission that depresses the switch button in reverse position it is not lined up in the center of the hole. The tab on the shift arm has to make contact with the button on the safety switch for the car to start in reverse and the lever will not depress the switch button. I think that there may be some binding between the shift lever and the throttle position cable arm inside the transmission.

Thanks

Emmett

Is the neutral safety switch normally open, or closed? If it's normally open, then when it park, or neutral, the tab should press the button on the switch. If normally closed, it will be just the opposite. (I don't recall which it is just offhand.....)

May want to consider changing the governor pressure sensor/solenoid, or, at least, taking them out and inspecting them. They tend to get clogged up, and things start acting funny.

The switch is normally open until it come into contact with the shift arm tab that closes it in neutral or park.

As I stated before the tansmission park rod seems to be not going back far enough to line the park tab on the shift arm up so as to close the neutral switch in park. I need to drain the transmission and take a close look at the shift arm, park rod and the kick down to see if there is something bent, broken or out of adjustment. I was trying to save fifty bucks on oil hoping someone had the same problem and I would know what to look for going inn.

Thanks

Emmett

Look at the governor solenoid when you take the pan off.
