Wont run at first.
Hi all, I think my info is in my signature but I will put it in here anyway. I have a 97 1500 2wd 318 136,xxx miles. I have a newly rebuilt tranny, and have seafoamed the crap out of it for a huge smoke show. The truck runs great. But after is sets for maybe a week, ( I have another easier on gas car I drive to work), it will start up fine but wont idle on its own until after I keep in the gas pedal for a bit. It is almost like when I replaced the fuel pump and had to run all the air out of the lines, or the same when it runs out of fuel. I will rev it up and let off and it dies. If I keep it revved for a bit, it will idle fine and all is good until it sets for a while. Could this be a case of leaking down injectors?
More likely a gummed up, or slow responding IAC. It's on the back of the throttle body. You can trying cleaning it up first, (DIY in FAQ section) if that doesn't seem to help, test the throttle position sensor, if that's good, replace the IAC.
Either the IAC like Hey You says or it could be while sitting the battery voltage gets low due to sitting. The IAC will not operate properly without 12 volts now your battery may spin the starter and crank the truck but the reason it may be running fine after a while is the battery gets charged up from the alternator.
HeyYou, Sorry I didn't mention, I already shined up the IAC not too long ago. But thanks for bringing that up, Timbo, you might be right on, the battery is on its way out, truck is very slow cranking, but it fires and goes. The alt charges it back up and as long as it doesn't sit long, it seems ok on the battery. It just doesn't get driven enough to warrant buying a battery right now. I did not know the IAC could be that picky about voltage. thanks for the input, Dodge Forum comes through for me again.
Just to see if it is the battery let the truck sit during the week and Saturday morning check the voltage on the battery with the truck not running. If it is below 12v try cranking the truck. if it will not idle turn the switch off, stick a charger on it for like 15-20 minutes at 10 amps. Go try it again if it idles then the battery is the culprit. Oh and do not disconnect the cables while charging you don't want to reset your computer in the middle of an experiment. This will save you from buying a battery if you don't need one and if this don't work then an IAC is cheaper than a battery any day.
