Default correct way to set "thrust" and check crank endplay magnum 5.9

what is the correct procedure for this? my book (how to rebuild the small block mopar) says the endplay spec is 0.002"-0.007" but dosen't say to check endplay just gives a procedure on setting thrust.

i was told to set the thrust install crank install caps torque main bolts to 35ft lbs then give the rear of crank a good whack then continue to torque 60ft lbs then final 85ft lbs.

im using the factory crank its been ground with clevite bearings to match
any help is appreciated

Thrust and end play are two terms for the same thing. How much the crank will move front to back when installed.

I just put a dial indicator on the crank snout, stick a prybar between the block, and one of the crank throws, push it firmly in one direction, zero my gauge, then push the crank the other way, and see what I get.
