i swapped the cluster in my 01, so it doesn't match the PCM, and it didn't create a problem.

People have posted some problems with VIN number match in the past, including ABS, emissions inspection, maybe more. I don't know...

non-matching vin number in the PCM tends to annoy the ABS and SRS systems.... the lights come on, and the systems don't work.

Yeah....that reads so simple.

What state are you in? Do you have to be concerned about inspections/smog/etc.?

I live in Michigan and we don't have any inspections, I can get a full rebuild kit for the 318 for around $300, my uncles a dealer and gets discounted prices. I'm just hoping there isn't extensive damage to the cylinder wall.

I think I remember reading that only 360's from 1999 vehicles are balanced on the flex plate and all the other years are balanced on the converter.

Changed somewhere between 96 and 99.... not sure exactly when. (though 96 would make some sense....) after that year, flex plate does the balancing, converter is neutral balance.

Yep it is pretty easy to figure out when your looking at the flex plate and the torque converter. Where are the weights located? I have a 96 engine & flex plate also if you'd like me to take pictures of the flex plate and show you the weights.
