Cool 318 to 360 swap

I have a few questions. But first I have a 2000 ram 1500 4x4 sport 206k, theres piston slap, and I rather swap to a 360 then rebuild the 318. What all will I need in order to do the swap. The 360 I'm looking at is a 2001 with 126k, it is a 4x4. Thanks in advance

Are you getting the 360 at a junkyard? If so you want to take the flex plate, torque converter & the PCM on the passenger side firewall.

You really do not need the torque converter but it MIGHT have a different stall spend then the 318 and if it is there why not take it?
You FOR SURE NEED the flex plate and the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. If it is missing the accessory drive brackets that is OK as yours from the 318 will fit.

Hope this helps some if you have more questions ask away.

And as dman has pointed out the search feature is your friend. It will get you tons of information and then all you need to do is go thru it all and take what you need. Then you can come back and ask even more questions.

you dont need to get the pcm from the 360 donor truck. all you need is a sct tuner from hemifever, with a tune for a 360, instead of a 318. been there done that.

ive got about 750 miles on my built 360 swap, and everything is all fine and dandy!

Redneck,

Why do you keep saying this all the time? Yes if you don't have access to the 360 PCM then yes you can get Sean to write you a new program for the 360 to load over your 318. But if it is there WHY NOT take it???? Then if you have not done any performance mods to your 360 you don't need a tuner from Sean. And BTW you can't get a tuner from Sean right now............................................... .....................The new ones are not out yet and when they do come out they are going to cost more. So again if the PCM is sitting right there why would I not want to take it????

i say this because, even if you get the 360 pcm, you will have to have it flashed to your vin, thus reflashing the entire pcm to run whatever motor your truck came with. so thats why i say it. it would be cheaper in the long run to go with hemifever.

Why do you have to have it flashed to your vin? The PCM's I have for my Jeep don't have the vin of my Jeep in them. It doesn't care what vin# is in it to run.

If your worried about this then yes I see why you'd want to keep that PCM but I don't understand why it is an issue.

It has something to do with some of the Dodge subsystems that your Jeep doesn't have. I just don't remember what it is. I know the gauge cluster (of all things) relies on the VIN from the PCM to function properly and throws a b1tch fit if it isn't right.

dude,
OK that make sense then. I didn't know this my Jeep could give a hoot what vin is on the PCM. So yes if your vin# has to match or the gauge cluster and other stuff won't work right then I can understand wanting to keep your PCM.

Thanks I learned something today. That is always a good thing.

What does the DOdge cluster do when the PCMs don't match? This is also the first time I've heard of this, and I;ve swapped a couple (Jeeps with CCD bus).
