Default 2002 Ram 2500 5.9

Hi All,
Just shopping for some info and input. I am considering the purchase of a 2002 2500 with the 5.9 and the dana 60 limited slip with 4.10 gears. The truck is in excellent condition, with just over 53K miles and minimal signs of wear or abuse. A real nice truck in a world of 100K beaters.
Anyone here have something similar that can give me some type of idea how bad the mileage will be? I figure 10-12 except if pulling which I don't do much of any more.
Would a swap down to a 3.23 of 3.55 be worth the effort? I've changed gearsets in the Danas before (back in the days of my 67 RT HEMI) and know the work involved.
Any input would be appreciated.

Paul

Welcome to DF. With these trucks, be prepared to do the plenum work in the intake as they all fail and will use oil until you fix it (read the plenum sticky thread). You're pretty spot on for MPG's. These engines love their gas. Towing a 5000lb boat with mine I don't see the mpg drop below 10-11 and it gets about 12-13 average. If it's an automatic trans, take care of it, keep it cool. As far as the gearing goes I don't know much about that stuff, someone else will chime in. But if its got that few of miles on it I'd pull the trigger on it. Sounds like a nice truck!

X2 on the mpg. I had a 99 ram with almost the same setup. 2500 with 4.10 and Dana 60 except with the 5 speed. Best mileage I ever got was 14 going 55 on the highway. Average at regular speeds was right around 12 mpg. I think 3.23 would be too high of gearing, it would struggle too much to maintain speed. I think with the 3.55 they turn about 1400-1500 rpm at 60. 4.10 gearing puts it around 2k at 60 IIRC.

when you say its got a 5.9, you mean gasser correct, as opposed to the 5.9 diesel.

so the 5.9 V8 is not the strongest engine in the world, and you'll greatly appreciate the 4.10 gears. everybody with the factory 3.55 would kill for the 4.10, so don't even consider removing them.

mileage will be about 12-14.

+1...if you go to higher gears, you're going to hate your life when driving up hills or towing, especially if you have some meaty tires on there
