Default differential help!

I was driving at average speed of 40 mph when my rear drive shaft fell out. i thought it broke at the u joint so i would take the shaft off and use 4 wheel drive to get home. But i looked at the diff and it actually broke the yoke i think at the spline. the u joint was still intact. The other part ripped out of the differential and was still on the drive shaft. I ended up taking the rear diveshaft out and putting it in my bed then drove home since i didn't have AAA or anything. so on my way back in 4 high it was only a few miles down the road i noticed i have no speedometer and a noise started coming from the rear diff i looked at it in the morning and the rear drum breakes look ****ed like out of place the wheel sticks out farther now. idk how much it is to rebuild it but i know its like 9-1000 for a new rear end and about 5-600 for a used one. anybody got any suggestions.

I made your photos visible. To do this with TinyPic site, you find for each image the link for "raw image file". Use that URL.

This might be why no one took a look here, but also this topic could be moved to Tech section if a moderator so deems.

What vehicle is this? year, make, model -- 1500 2500?

I'm pretty sure it's a 1500, quad cab...since the driveshaft and ends are so recognizable. lol Anyways please put the truck info in your USER CP Profile and Signature.

I find it hard to accept that there wasn't any prior abuse to this incident of shearing the pinion completely. You have had to be romping on this thing, coupled with some shudder from pinion angle misalignment or similar. Looks like tranny fluid as been coming out for some time, but that's a guess from what is shown on top of diff housing.

I think you might be lucky that inside of housing is ok. I'd expect to replace the internals. Minimum would be the entire carrier including ring and pinion. Based on the tire being pushed out, then most likely the end of the axleshaft is snapped and it's going out since it's a semi-float axle. The c-clip inside retains the axleshaft to prevent that. So it must have gone along with the carnage as the pinion gear was pulled in.

It's 50/50 on cost for parts/labor vs. finding one in a junkyard to just replace. What are you capable of doing with your own skillz?

I would say the clutch pack in the carrier let loose and junk jammed up the ring & pinion causing it to snap off at the yoke. Where are you located? I will have a very good used 9.25 up for sale later this week CHEAP.

there is also whats called driveline snap. most common is due to the pinion nut not being torqued right and everything locks up and snaps. happened to me. you will just have to take the cover off the diff and see what dmg has been done. you never know maybe you got lucky and all it is is the pinion, but if the wheel is stickin out then you may have to replace the axle shafts if they broke, but hopefully not.

Pinion is sucked in there pretty far, be prepared to see some serious carnage. Don't be surprised if everything in there is thrashed.

Buy a Junk Yard rear end to replace it and move on as I'll bet as HeyYou said you're going to see tons of carnage when you pull the cover off.

He is in Canada..... shipping would kill you.

It is more than likely going to be FAR cheaper to replace the whole thing, rather than rebuild it.
