Default In desperate need of Transmission help. 2001 Ram 1500 5.9

Hey guys, just bought my first Dodge and I'm starting to think I got a lemon for sure. Problem after problem, but aside from a rough engine "bog" occasionally my biggest problem is the tranny just went out. My buddy has one from a 1996 1500 with a 5.2. I have been told it will work with my 5.9 and some tweaking,my question to anyone that can help is what do I need to do? Aside from preventative maintainence type things, I need it to run well and be reliable. Still have my old transmission for parts if need be.
Thanks to anyone in advnace if you can offer a rookie some well needed pointers. T.J.

You have a 2001. A 96 tranny will not work your truck as they changed trannys when they switched to 0BD2 in 98.5?

94 to 96 they had the 46rh (hydraulic tranny) after that dodge went to an electronic transmission. 97 & 98 they had one style of solenoids. 99 and onward they had an other style. To answer you question, all the "hard parts'' will be the same except for the valve body and the O.D. tail shaft unit. I rebuilt my tranny about 2-3 years ago so I'm a little hazy as to the specific part names. Sorry I don't have any more details.

Thanks for the quick replies, so there's absolutely no way to make it work?

Don't bother, get a 99-01 tranny. You want one from a 4x4 IF that's what your truck is or one from a 2wd IF that's what your truck is.

Adding ALL the info about your truck to your sig and profile is a big help.

Yeah, 96 was a bit of a bastard child. that's when OBD II was unofficially introduced.
