Default 4wd t case problems?

Ok so last night was at a foot ball game and almost got stuck in a muddy field put it in 4wd the light comes on but front tires dont spin. tried a few more times then there was a grinding noise when trying to drive in 4wd. I finally got out in 2wd. After I was out I was trying to inspect to see what was wrong I put it in 4wd light comes on crawled underneath front drive shaft seemed locked in so I thought it was just the cad.

So today while replacing front diff fluid I checked the cad and took it off and it was working. I put all 4 tires in the air, put it in 4wd( light comes on) but the front drive shaft does not spin..the front axle is locked also, it does the same thing for 4lo. Im assuming somethings wrong with the tcase but I don't really know what to do. Its like its random I don't understand. I will be taking it off in the next month because there is a grinding noise coming from my clutch pretty sure its the pilot bearing, but im just replacing the whole clutch while im at it.

what is there to go wrong inside a transfer case that would cause this?

95 dodge 2500 4x4 nv4500 dana60s 4:10s np241 transfercase.

I appreciate any help, I'm just trying to get an idea of what im going to have to fix

Even on jackstands the front shaft doesn't turn in 4wd? That seems REALLY odd. I would suspect a bent/broken shift fork, bad gears, or broken chain. Broken chain would tend to make some TRULY hideous noises when you put it in 4wd though......

yeah on jack stands it doesn't spin the front drive shaft and there Isn't any grinding. I'm not sure what it could be, I know the previous owner said he did something to the transfer case to get it to work.. maybe I can dig up his number somehow.

So only thing that would really go wrong and cause that would be the shift for or the chain?

No, not the only things, it needs to be taken apart and checked. But if you still have 2wd and you drive around with no bad noises, it might be something simple/cheaper to fix. Have you checked all the linkage? Maybe some thing is loose.

ok I just took it to a gravel lot to try it out again. put it in 4hi there is grinding noise and the truck wont move at all like its in nuetral. tried it in 4lo and it moved for a few seconds then there was a clanging noise and was back to not moving at all. 2wd works fine

Sounds like a broken chain...... t-case needs to come out, and torn down. (or simply replaced.....)

Ok so I found a used tcase for pretty cheap im thinking about its from a 98 2500 with the 46re tranny. I have a 95 with the nv4500. Will this work? I mean I know I might have to swap the input shaft because of the different spline count I believe, but there shouldn't be anything that would really prevent me from swapping it in correct? Because on my tcase the shift pattern is 2hi then down is 4hi then to the right is N and 4lo

but on the newer ones its in a straight line would this be a problem?

Should work. Just remember the new shift pattern. Can you grab the shift **** off the donor truck?

the shift pattern is different as stated, not sure the linkage is the same between the years though. I doubt it. I dont think it's as easy as changing the shift ****.
