Default Intake upgrade?

I have a 2001 dodge ram 5.9 4x4. Wanted to know if a after market intake really make a Difference in mpg and power vs. cost of the new intake. Where and what types are the best. And who has one installed.

You've been a member here since 2010 and don't know the answer to that question yet? This topic has been brought up 50 million times LOL

Assuming you are talking about the air hat, get a K&N drop in filter for your stock assembly, and don't waste your money on anything else. You'll see no gains compared to money you spend. JMHO

You get two choices..... Hughes FI Air Gap, or, chrysler M1. The M1 is no longer in production, and are becoming difficult to find...... but, they are still out there.

Both will result in some low-end power loss. Neither will make much of a difference on fuel economy. Both will give better power in the mid-upper RPM range. Both respond VERY WELL to complementary mods. (cam, rockers, headers, etc.) Which also has the bonus of offsetting any power loss from just changing the manifold. M1 is nominally cheaper, provided you can find one.....

Several members have one, or the other, a couple members have run both. They should wander thru here in the next day or so to contribute further to this.

Either way, Air Hat or intake manifold itself, both topics are numerous if one does a search.

I guess I can chime in here. I luckily bought the M1 while they were still making them. When I installed mine in my truck, the only things I had done motor-wise were my shorty headers and the SCT tuner. The M1 definitely improves your Mid-Top range RPM's from what I can tell (never dyno-ed it though). I also have 4.56 gears in my axles, so I didn't notice much of a low-end power loss.

You talking about the intake manifold or the air intake to the TB? You can see the difference in answers you get when you don't specify....

Actually, if it is the air hat we are talking about, NO gain in mpg will be seen. (waste of money) . And if we are talking about the manifold itself, M1 or F1 , you'll likely get worse mpg's after all the other mods you'll have to do to make it worthwhile. Of course you might see a slight bump in mpg's if your current kegger is blown.

I've got the FI Airgap w/rockers and a 52mm TB. Love it, mind you, my truck is apart again but that's besides the point ;o)

i have the Fi Airgap also, but i ran mine with the Big Gulp from hughes also, which flows like 1007 cfm if i remember right..., and let me tell you, you can hear that thing suckin air for days....... sounds bad *** and the engine loved it offroadin. but yes it does move the powerband more up into the mid/high rpms. but these magnum motors love the higher rpms anyways.
