Wondered about that.... Given how bad the drum looks, the slip-in band is only going to be a band-aid fix..... it will probably eat the friction material off fairly quickly. Gonna be rebuild time in the not-so-distant future.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking also. I called WITTRANS.com and the slip in involves cutting out the old front band and slipping in the new one. No cure for the rear band. I'll go check the meat left on the rear band and if there is some I'll try the slip in for however long it lasts.

No big deal either way. This is in a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 and I knew the trans was suspect when I got it. Surprising to me how well it shifted though...that's why I'll try the slip in.

If ya get a couple more months out of it, should be worth while.

I've had one of those bands in my trans. for about a year now. It was a quick fix to keep my truck drivable till I could rebuild the trans. It's been in there longer than I originally anticipated, but it's still shifting right and otherwise acting normal. My clutch drum was also looking pretty bad and I didn't expect the band to last this long, but all's well so far.

The band

The worn out band needs to be cut in two and removed in two pieces. The slip in band does just that, slips in without having to disassemble the trans.

That's encouraging, thanks Arde. The rear band seems OK so I'll order one and try it out.

If/When you rebuild the transmission, go with Borg-Warner rather than stock Mopar. B-W bands have much more meat and are sturdier.

Good info, thanks Gary-L.

I ordered the slip in and it ought to be here in a couple days. Any guesses on how long it will last?

Shooting for completion tonight but would like opinions on 2 items...

Delete the check valve or not?

Is my accumulator OK with just the single spring mentioned above? I don't see any springs or pieces of springs anywhere in my garage. Little bit uncomfortable on this issue.

Thanks for the help, almost done...for now...

those are great pictures. what kind of camera is that?

i'd focus on one problem at a time and delete the check valve later by drilling it out (most simple solution). you can cut the tubing and replace the hose at and even later date when installing a cooler.

sorry, i don't know about the accumulator spring.

dhvaughan, thanks. Pics taken with cheapie Olympus VR340 wide angle WalMart special. It has a close-up mode that helps with stuff like this.

I tried getting the connections loose on the valve and they were stuck. Might have to cut but soaking now in PB blaster.
