97 Ram 1500 oil problem
hey all im new to the dodge forum. I got a issue i was wondering if anyone else has had. So ive had my truck for a little while its a 97 ext cab ram 1500 with a 5.9 in it. I changed the oil when i first got it about 6 months ago. I checked the oil in it the other night and it was bone dry. I put 3 quarts of oil in it that night. Was planning on a oil change for the weekend. The 3 quarts put me on the safer side rather running no oil. Was on the express way and my oil pressure gage went from 40 were it normally is, to 0 and back to 40. It did this a few times. Then after about 3 times of doing this it went to 0 and stayed there. I was driving on the expressway at the time and was 3 miles from the next exit. The truck started ticking. So i figured i had a oil leak got off at the exit to gas station ran in and got some oil for it. When i pulled the dipstick to check it my oil was over filled. way over filled. Like almost 2x what it should have been!!! How if i only put 3 quarts in? So after the truck sat for a few mins i started it back up and drove it the 2 blocks back to my house. About 3 mins after i started it the oil press drop back to 0 and oil light stayed on.... anyone had this happen? Is it my oil pump? or my pressure unit? Clogged filter? anyone help with ideas before i tear it down and buy un needed crap would be helpful.
So... how many quarts of oil did you put in your truck? 3?! Truck should hold close to 5-5.5qts on avg. Not sure what your doing with adding three quarts. And the way you check oil is on a cold engine, like let-sit-overnight-cold engine. You pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, stick it back in, pull it out and the oil level should be at the top line.. 1/8" over is acceptable.
If you too much oil in, it will foam up and ruin your engine. If you put too little (ie 3 quarts) its gonna ruin your engine. Put 5+ qts in and see how oil pressure does. You should also be using a mechanical gauge, as dash gauges are not an accurate way to measure your psi.

Thanks matt. Will do. If oil pressure does not come back after putting right amount of oil in, should i change oil pump and the pressure unit? Seen how there not expensive figure it would make a good project maybe?
