Default 2000 ram 1500 starting problem

I have a 2000 ram 1500 4x4, 5.9 liter gas, automatic tran. It has been sitting for about 14 months due to some repairs needed to the rear end. Rebuild. Not my primary vehicle, so just worked on it in spare time. It ran fine when I parked it, except for the rear end. Now that all the repairs have been done, including new brake lines, it won't start. Battery is good, but when you turn it over it sounds like a clunk is coming from the starter or trans. Belts move about an inch and that's it. It has new plugs, compression has been checked and is good. This was done before I parked it. The master cylinder ran dry while replacing the brake lines, and rear end. Didn't know if some soft of safety device is keeping it from starting or what. It did run fine. Thanks for the help.

Check battery voltage. Sounds like it is getting weak. The engine attempts to turn, so, it seems everything else is working as it should.... Worst case: pull all the spark plugs, disable coil, and fuel pump, and crank the engine. Make sure it will turn....

Welcome to DF!

Thanks. I have turned it over manually. It's just when the starter tries to engage it sounds rough. Like its trying to turn but can't. I will re check to battery voltage, but it read 12.5 when I put it in. At least by my tester. I have had the alarm go crazy on this truck also.

Got something handy you can give it a jump from?

Already tried that. 50 amp start on the charger. It made the noise louder or more aggressive. The starter engages to a point that it got hot quick. The tranny is in neutral or park when I try to start. It just seems like something is keeping the tranny locked. I thought I might have tripped a sensor or something. Thanks

Take the starter off, have it tested. Or, if you know someone that has a tester, do a draw test on the starter. Anything over 200 amps when trying to crank indicates bad starter.

After having the starter tested and being told that it was ok, I took it elsewhere and had it tested again. Starter was bad. Replaced and am running again. Thanks.
