Red face 97 Dodge Ram automatic transmission

New member so sorry if I screw anything up with this post. I have a 97 1500 5.9 4x4 (gas). From what I gather on this site it has a 46RE. Recently it started acting like it's pulling 10 tons behind it when you first start to pull out. Does this about 50% of the time. Other times it is fine. I dropped the pan, changed the filter....found a good bit of metal particle stuck to the magnet and a piece of what I think was band material (about 1/2-3/4" wide 1 1/2-2" long with a curve to it). Put the pan back on, filled it up, and still drive it. Figure I'm in desperate need of a tranny. Question is I found a used 99 318 4x4 tranny, will it fit? Do I need to use my torque converter with it? Is there anything else I need to know to do this?

Welcome to DF

Look at the pan. The 318/5.2 may have a 44RE transmission and if you have a 46RE, then the answer is no. The piece you found may have come from the overdrive cluthes or the front drum in the transmission. This is just me, I have brought used parts before and had gotten burn. I would recommend either go thru the transmission or replace it will a reman mopar transmission. It has a 3 years or 100k warranty. I also recommend to flush the cooler lines.
