I think I will change the rear diff fluid as DodgeRam23 suggested. I see the rear pumpkin around the fill plug wet. Any idea how to get this to seal up.

Also I am thinking my catalytic converter may be plugged, as It seams to not accelerate very well and feels like there is a loss of power. Maybe one of these are causing the vibrating, rumbling noise that I heard.

The snap ring breaks simply because it can. Really wasn't the best design. The rest of your truck can be perfect, and the snap ring will still break. T-case saver is indeed the answer here.

I am having the exact same problem with my truck, its a 1999 ram 1500 4x4, but its a 5 speed. i accidentally shifted into 2nd from 3rd the other day and it started making some awful grinding noises too. it always made a whine when engine braking but now its really loud and it does it when accelerating, which it never did before, im afraid i roached my transfer case, any ideas? i changed my transfer case, front, and rear diff oil as well with 90w gear oil.

I don't think the t-case wants 90w.... it wants the same fluid as is in your trans. What's your trans fluid look like?

No, the t-case takes ATF+4 while the NV3500 takes Mopar syncromesh oil from dealer only. If the noises started after the fluid changes, then put in the correct oils and see what happens.

If you didn't add friction modifier to the rear, then that should be done as well.

I have the same truck you do, tomb0118 so keep us posted.

when you say “t case saver” are you referring to a kit for our rams? I believe I have the same noise driving under load. Someone told me it may be the chain in my t case.

Yup. You can find them here. (and various other places.) If your truck is high-mileage, wouldn't hurt to check how much chain slop you have as well. I know in my 96 with 200K miles, 4wd is all but useless, as the chain is stretched so much, it slips on the gears.

Well, I'm over 227k and climbing every day. I've noticed more gear rollover like sounds reverberating in the cab when starting out. What do you do with a loose chain besides replace the whole thing?
