The speedo reads "0" until it shifts. I seem to have all other gears. The Check Engine light is on, but its been that way for a year before this problem. Is this typical for a sensor / solenoid issue?
I'm not sure as mine has done it ever since I've owned it but only when it drops below 50 degrees and it's been sitting for a long time. Now I know why they wanted to come to me when I was wanting to look at it because it doesn't do it after a min or so. Does anyone know if it could be one of the speed sensors? I've replaced the one on the rear diff about a year or so ago. Could it also be that the one on the trans has gone bad? Is there also one on the tail shaft?

Replace the output sensor on your transmission. You may be getting a code for speed under 20 mph.

Just now thought about something. My cel hasn't been on but the guy I got it from had a lot of stuff rigged that I fixed the correct way. I'm wondering if he didn't pull the bulb for it. I will scan tomorrow anyways to see. Thanks.

Drove my truck again to see if I in fact had lost 2nd gear. I cant be sure I did. If I accelerate to what I think is 20-25 MPH (speedo now isn't working in 1st gear)and then let up some, it will shift and that's about 3000 RPMs in 1st gear. Once it shifts then the speedo starts working and it drives normal until I slow to 25 MPH. This started at the same time the ABS and Brake lights came on.
Could this be a speed sensor?

Highly likely. Sensor in question is on top of the differential.

Sorry to bring this back up but I want to make sure before spending any more money on this damn truck. I lied in post 8. It isn't going into od. It doesn't actually skip any gears it just shifts really fast and unless you pay attention it feels like it skips. If this is the governor pressure solenoid, can I just replace it or do I have to replace the sensor as well. I can't find the sensor on rockauto, just the solenoid and my local auto parts store can only find the sensor and they want $115 for it.

Try this:

Crawl under truck, and disconnect the 8 pin connector about halfway back on the drivers side of the trans.

Take truck for a test drive. Bear in mind, you will have ZERO automatic functions, you will have to manually shift the trans. Verify that you get all three gears. (O/D will also be disabled)

If the trans shifts properly that way, governor pressure sensor/solenoid are likely culprits.

There is an ebay seller, ElectricalAdvantage, or some such.... that sells the Borg Warner solenoid, and pressure sensor for around 100 bucks.

Check your TV cable before spending money though. Adjustment procedure is detailed in the factory service manual.

Thanks. I've adjusted and checked and rechecked the TV cable. It only acts up when in drive and it's below 40 and had sat for at least 8 hours. Manually I can go through the gears and it shifts fine until I put it in drive for third and it's in third for about half a second and goes to forth.

That's just bizarre.

Gotta be something electrical that the temp is affecting. Might be the only way to figger it out, is have a scanner plugged in when it is cold, and do some data logging. See what the PCM thinks is going on.

Should I just drop it off at the shop and say "Here, check it in the morning."
