So was changing out the old plugs on the the 5.9 all was going great till #5. Was working it out and at about 1/4" of threads out it twisted off..... So, I was able to blow out the leftover porcelain from the 1/2" of threads that remain. Right now it has an earplug pushed in it and put the heat shield back so I could have the PB blaster mixed with ATF soak on it over night.

Now my question is if I do have to pull the head do I have to pull the cam and chain and retiming it or can I just pull both manifolds and attached accessories then pull the head and reinstall the head with maybe just a rocker adjustment?

In order to remove the cylinder head, you will need to remove the intake manifold, then the offending cylinder head. The job is not hard, just time consuming.

Just a tip - remove all of the spark plug heat tubes from the heads and throw them away. They are more trouble than they are worth. They allow debris to collect around the base of the spark plug, making the plugs harder to remove later. Also, use anti-seize on the spark plug threads when installing them, so that removal will be painless later.

 

Try an easy out first. No point in pulling the head if you don't have to.

 

^+1... this is pre-made for an easy-out... just make sure the cathode is still there when it comes out... the easy-out will likely push the cathode out of the way, and it might break off.

 

I think I see the problem, Bosch platinum plugs.

 

Well after working it with a #5 extractor, a 3/8" drive X 10mm hex (x2), a 1/2" drive X 10mm impact socket, 1/2" ratchet and a 5' cheater bar it came free after an hour of vary slow movements. Bugered the threads just a little which cleaned up nice with a thread chaser and a little grease.

I mocked up another plug so I could have an exact idea of what I was working with, glade I did!

Do wish I could find the one that installed these with no anti- seize.
