When I turn on my windshield wipers, it blows the fuse. If I turn the wipers on to low or high before I turn on the ignition, and then turn on the ignition it does not blow the fuse. I can switch back and forth to high and low and everything is OK till I go through the delay section of the switch and then it blows the fuse. I can also push the wiper wash and the wipers will work just fine and so does the wash. So its evident that the problem lies within the delay section. Would this be the switch itself or is there a delay relay that could be the problem or could it be in the motor?

 

Unplug the wiper motor, turn ignition on, turn wiper switch to delay. Does it still blow the fuse?

Man, that reads like the switch itself. Interested to know what you find out since we is same rig.

 

the delay adjustment is part of the multi-function switch. its a variable resistor that puts a varying voltage on a wire to the CTM (central timing module). its the black box under the dash, behind the aux power plug. the CTM contains a circuit board that reads the input voltage, and translates it into a timed 12 volt pulse on the low speed wiper circuit. the wiper circuit has a relay in the pdc that sends the higher amp power to wiper motor.

the most common cause of fuse blowing there is either a bad wiper motor or a break in the wiper wiring at the tilt wheel joint.

 

So, I disconnected the wiper motor and it blew the fuse. I guess this means that its probably the switch or the wiper wiring at the tilt joint like DHVaughan said. I have been the original owner and the wheel has only been tilted a few times. So what do you guys think? I'm kinda thinkin its the switch.

use a long skinny torx to remove the clam shell covers around the column. they unhook from each other with interlocking tabs and are a pita to remove without breaking them. its takes a lot of patience to tilt, squeeze, push, pull just right to unhook them. you might have to remove the knee panel? i can't remember. this will expose the switch and the column wiring. you'll need a security (hollow) torx to remove the switch. autozone sells them in a set.

when reassembling, replace the security torx heads with 4mm allen heads.

 

Thanks for the info and the heads up on the hollow torx. I've had the steering cover off before and your right, it takes patients. I don't remember having to take the bottom knee panel off.

 

No need to go to a hospital for assistance in removing the steering cover
