Default Shift lever will not go into park

Ok I have a 95 1500 p/u 46rh trans and the shift lever will not go into park, nor will the key release. I have dropped the linkage and was able to remove the key. The shift lever on the trans will not go into park..I have dropped the pan and have found nothing that looks wrong or loose. I am assuming that this is a parking pawl issue...Any thoughts on what comes next ?

Thank You,
John Nicholson

Something is binding somewhere. Need to find out what, and fix it. Watch what happens while you are trying to get the trans into park, with the pan off. There is a linkage that runs back a ways.... may have to dig deeper into the trans.

yeah i have the pan down and have not pulled the valve body yet. The linkage I'm assuming your referring to is the park rod, and it goes back to the park pawl....I can't find any diagram as to how it works with the park pawl ? I have also read that in order to work on this area it has to be out of the vehicle. I am assuming that a spring has broken someplace within this housing which is not allowing the pawl to engage, but until I have a diagram of how it works ???

Download the 95 service manual from the faq section, should be something useful in there.

You can pull the valve body with the park rod still attached rather than removing that PITA e-clip and see in there with a small inspection mirror and flashlight. Not much to see really, but you can see what has to line up to get the park rod back in. I disconnect the driveshaft at the rear end so I can rotate the trans. a little at a time till things line up, and the park rod, still attached to the valve body, will slip back into place real easy.
FWIW

I have a Dodge service manual for my year truck and as far as the park pawl its not helpful at all, I do believe pulling the valve body is my next choice . Hopefully I will be able to at least see whats going on...
