i wish i had a dollar for every cad problem posted. i'd be rich.

read this-
http://dodgeram.org/tech/repair/4X4/4x4_engagment.htm

your problem is either-
no vacuum at the cad. should be vac on one when in 2wd to move the collar, and vac on the other when in 4wd to move the collar the other way.

sticky/rusty diaphragm shaft inside the cad. needs cleaning/sanding.

step 1 - fix the vac first.
in the meantime, soak the 4 little cad bolts in pb-blaster or other penetrating oil.

What made you go to check 4wd in the first place? Did some event prompt this non-working 4wd? That would also help the diagnosis. Has the CAD been opened up by you or anyone else before this happened?

LOL! My dad and I both lost our 4wd at almost roughly the same time. We both have 98's. Long story short, we both now have a posi lok lol. I love the thought of having a manually operated actuator that a vacuum operated one.

They're easy to install as well. Just ditch the CAD

soak the 4 cad bolts with pb-blaster. they are very SMALL. gently remove them. if they don't come loose, soak them repeatedly. don't break them unless you want to drill them out.

label and remove the vac lines. put a pan under it - a cup full of gear oil will run out. remove the cad and take it to the work bench. bench test the cad with a vac pump. see it not work. lol. take some pics, then disassemble the stupid thing and unstick/clean the shaft. you can install a new gasket or just reseal it with RTV. RTV is fine.
